Founder & Principal

Ben Rooks

Ben brings his over 30 years of healthcare experience in equity research, investment banking and independent advisory work to bear for ST Advisors’ clients.

Healthcare, and especially the healthcare information technology sector, is where my passion lies, and I’ve been fortunate to have spent my career in this fascinating sector of our economy. I worked in managed care consulting immediately after graduating from Brandeis University with a BA in psychology, and then earned an MBA in healthcare management at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. After Wharton, I worked in managed care and then in healthcare claims data analysis.

Finding claims analysis to be far too academic, I decided to become a sell-side equity research analyst in 1993. Over the course of the next decade I covered the stocks of over 25 healthcare information technology companies, as well as companies in the e-health, drug information, and pharmacy benefit management sectors. During this time, I worked on multiple IPOs and follow-on offerings and built a strong reputation for penetrating insight and high integrity with both institutional investors and the management of the companies I followed. I was one of the first analysts to recognize the potential impact of healthcare IT and to cover it as a discrete sector. It was during this time that Zacks recognized me as an All-Star Analyst.

After ten years in equity research, I wanted to work more closely with companies and decided to move to investment banking. For the next six years I helped dozens of companies in healthcare information technology, pharmaceutical information, revenue cycle management, and technology-enabled services complete transactions ranging in size from $40 to $365 million. During my banking tenure, my clients repeatedly commented on my industry knowledge, strategic perspective, and differentiated ability to position their companies to both investors and potential strategic partners. More than once I heard, “I’ve never met a banker who really understood my business before.”

Investment banking was exciting but, by its nature, almost solely transaction-driven. I determined that I would be both happier and have a greater impact if I could have a more genuine and less transactional relationship with my clients. In 2009 I formed ST Advisors so that I could partner with management teams to craft strategic direction and drive corporate growth without the need for an immediate transaction as the basis of our relationship. As an independent and trusted advisor, I work with companies that are seeking to buy, sell, or grow, helping define the key value drivers of their business, express their strategy, evaluate their approaches to markets and opportunities, and determine their best partners and ultimate goals, including, at the appropriate time, optimal exit strategies.

After more than 30 years, I continue to find the healthcare information technology industry fascinating and look for ways to continue to both share and expand my knowledge. Over my career, I’ve judged the Microsoft Health Innovation Awards since its inception in 1997 as well as the Microsoft Life Sciences Innovation Awards. I’ve sat on the boards and advisory boards of a number of private companies, and also on the editorial board for Healthcare Informatics. I have been a fairly regular contributor to the leading industry blog, HISTalk, through my Healthcare IT From the Investor’s Chair column.

After over a decade in the Bay Area (San Francisco and Sonoma), where I sat on the board of Sonoma’s Federally Qualified Health Center, my wife, dog, and I moved to Barcelona in March 2024, where we’re currently exploring, eating, and trying to improve our Spanish.

Principal

Michelle Mattson-Hamilton

For the last 15 years, Michelle has led the firm’s strategy and corporate development practices, engaging with clients ranging in size from start-ups to Fortune 20 companies.

I joined ST Advisors after spending several years in corporate strategy positions in the telecommunications industry. During my time in telecom, I investigated a broad array of company and industry challenges while conducting market research, evaluating new business opportunities, exploring competitive and market dynamics, and assessing acquisition and partnership opportunities.

While I enjoyed the work itself, I wasn’t passionate about the industry. Around this time, a close family member battled with degenerative healthcare complications, and my family and I struggled to assist meaningfully. I recognized that healthcare had become the most complex and fastest-growing sector of the economy — and an industry in dire need of technological innovation — but my personal family experience was a catalyzing moment. Healthcare was where I both wanted, and needed, to spend the remainder of my career.

In 2010, I teamed with Ben Rooks, ST Advisors’ founder, to lead the firm’s strategy and corporate development practices. Over the last 15 years, ST Advisors’ strategy practice has engaged with firms ranging in size from start-ups to Fortune 20 companies, supporting them with research-driven advice and thoughtful analysis as they tackled diverse and multifaceted strategic issues. During that same period, public, private, and sponsor-backed organizations ranging from $50 million in revenue to Fortune 200 have engaged our corporate development practice to supercharge their inorganic growth initiatives. In times of unprecedented market noise and valuation challenges, we have helped our clients find the right assets to grow their businesses, a disproportionate number of which were proprietary transactions.

Passionate about using technology to improve the US healthcare system, I continue to look for opportunities to both expand and share my knowledge and interest with others, including as a contributor to TechTarget’s SearchHealthIT, a judge and mentor for the HIMSS VentureConnect program, and a contributor to Healthcare Informatics and collaborator in the creation of its Top 100 list, as well as by authoring industry articles.

Having always relished adventure, my husband and I lived in London from 2013 to 2022 - until the Pacific Northwest called us home. I continue to enjoy traveling and exploring new places, as well as spending time with friends and family, playing board games (Wingspan and Cascadia are a few current favorites!), learning tai chi, and working to improve my Spanish. I earned both my MBA and BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Washington.
